One of the largest Muslim NGO’s of Germany, Islamische Gemeinschaft Milli Gorus or IGMG, held its annual Islamophobia activity across Europe in 25 cities on Saturday. In German city of Ulm, a knife-wielding thug attacked the activity stand. Luckily, he was apprehended by activity staff before harming anyone.
Women branch of IGMG has been organizing street activity every year to draw attention to discrimination Muslim women face at workplaces. The activity took place in 25 cities in Germany and The Netherlands this year. The motto of this year’s event was “support diversity.”
Thousands of people in both countries gained awareness of daily discrimination Muslim women face everyday at work places.
However, in one German city, the women almost became the victims of an Islamophobic attack. The tragedy took place in German city of Ulm. A man approached the activity stand and started verbally threatening the volunteers. Then he took out a knife to attack the women. However, he was subdued by the activity’s male staff before injuring anyone. Investigation of the German police about the incident is still ongoing, according to Turkish media.
Free lance journalist and activist Tuba Sarialtin wrote on her twitter account that if there was no male members of IGMG around the stand, the attacker would most likely be able to psychically harm the women in front of several people. She also said does not expect much from the police investigation.
